In addition to the medallions made at the Japan Mint, there is a large variety of
privately-made medals. These are usually large and heavy

Here are a few examples.
Large bronze medal. Inscribed '[????] Hyogo Prefecture,
Meiji 44 [1911] April.' Excellent quality. Although I cannot
read the complete inscription, this looks to have been
made for an exhibition of some sort.
The obverse design has imperial paulownia leaves in the foreground and an imperial mum crest as a rising sun.

The inscription on the reverse reads 'Meiji 36 [1906] Victorious Return Commemorative,  52nd Association, Honor.'

Size: 5.7 cm diameter, 0.4 cm thick. Weight: about 120 grams.
Same as above but bronze. In addition, the central phrase on the reverse is different.

Large bronze medal. Inscribed '3rd Prize, Meiji 43 [1910],
Fukushima Prefecture.'
Rare medal from the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. The emblem shows that this was a police-related award.
Inscribed 'Commendation' and 'Showa 6 [1931] Tainan District.'
The kanji for district here is
shuu, which really means something like a state. Tainan Shuu (no longer extant) included
the cities of Tainan and Chiayi, as well as the prefectures of Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan.
Somewhat large: diameter 6 cm.
