Great Japan
Sericulture Association
大日本養蚕協会
Sericulture, the production of silk from cultivated silkworms, is an ancient practice in Japan, having
been allegedly introduced by the deity
Okuninushi no Mikoto.

Silk was a major export in the Meiji era. This civilian group was founded in Meiji 25 [1892].

Although I am not sure this is always the case, but the Merit Medal examples I have found have the
1st & 2nd Classes labeled Achievement Medal (Kouseki-shou 功績章) while the 3rd to 5th are
labeled Meritorious Medal (Kourou-shou 功労章). These have almost the same meaning, so they
may just be associated with the different classes.

Great Japan Sericulture Association 2nd Class
Red Ribbon Merit Badge.
Note that this 2nd class badge is labeled
differently than the one above, which does not
indicate a variety of 2nd Class. This one, and the
one below, indicate 2nd Class and the ribbon
color, so they are both probably special kinds of
2nd Class medals. Perhaps they were awarded
based on the amount of money donated.

The case and the medal reverse read '2nd Class
Red Ribbon Merit Badge.'
